NSCP Partners...

We Are Re-Developing this program... are you interested?

NSCP is working with people like our province, the Maritime Beef Council , Canadian Cattlemen's Association, Maritime Beef Testing Society and others to move the NS Beef industry forward. Its not easy, and it takes a long time, but we continue to see steady positive progress.

Nova Scotia Cattle Producers (NSCP) is developing a new corporate partnership program. This program will allow industry organizations to work with NSCP to move the beef industry in Nova Scotia forward toward a prosperous and exciting future!

Mandate:

The mandate of the NSCP is...

To promote and assist in the sustainable development of Nova Scotia’s beef production industry in the best interest of the members and ultimately all Nova Scotians.

Objectives:

The general objectives of the Association are as follows…
  • To promote the beef industry of Nova Scotia to the benefit of the members.
  • To provide information on production and marketing or other related activities of beef.
  • To affiliate with and to appoint members to any group beneficial to the association.

These objectives are pursued through a Strategic Action Plan focusing activities in the areas of Market Development, Communications & Education, and Sustainability of the Organization and the Industry as a whole.

Change:  new goals, initiatives and governments…

Since 2005, we have focused on establishing our new organization, delivering important producer programs, setting up a new levy and registration system, and advocating on behalf of our producers on many issues.  We invested our limited resources wisely, with many positive results. NSCP was the leading organization or a key partner in many initiatives, including:

  • creating several flexible industry development plans for Nova Scotia.
  • creating a Maritime organization and strategy
  • presenting those plans to senior government contacts of all 3 Maritime Provinces.
  • developing maritime based projects, including the first Maritime Beef conference, production modeling, a herd renewal plan and more.

We must also monitor and respond to ongoing and new trends and issues in the industry.  There has been significant government change, new government programming and many related issues. Current issues include;

  • work to access potential markets, introducing a strong added value approach,
  • further strengthening industry infrastructures,
  • leveraging additional funding resources from federal and other sources,
  • communication with our producers,
  • APF consultations,
  • the 2007 CCA Semi Annual Meeting in Halifax ,
  • establishing the Advanced Payment Program for livestock,
  • working to assist the Maritime Beef Testing Station
  • focusing attention on retaining and growing the Nappan Research farm,
  • focus on traceability, OTM, food safety, environmental farm planning, animal welfare, SRM disposal, and more.

Opportunities:  the challenges provide great opportunity…

There have also been new industry opportunities, influenced by international, national and regional realities. Other influences can  be found in studies such as these and others:

In 2005, AAFC’s “Empowering Canadian Farmers” was completed, with a key meeting in Truro, NS.  The report pointed out; primary producers are still experiencing steadily reduced net farm incomes, the “Farm Income Crisis”, even as the agribusiness sector continues to experience record financial results.

In 2006, a Canada/US/Mexico study, “The Future of Animal Agriculture in North America" was completed and noted “…every facet of the animal food chain; from genetics to retail and food service…is adjusting to the rapid pace of change.”

Rapidly changing market conditions…

Every facet of North America’s animal food chain, from genetics to retail and food service outlets, is evolving to meet rapidly changing market conditions.  New farm-level productivity, processing efficiency, distribution systems and marketing are redefining the relationships among food chain stakeholders. More than ever, we need to identify and use industry alliances, sometimes with conventional allies, sometimes with suppliers and customers.

Our Mission Statement and Our Vision for NSCP and the Industry:

We developed our mission statement and a future vision works as a statement of the guiding principles for this organization.

                                                   Mission Statement…

NOVA SCOTIA CATTLE PRODUCERS is a producer-driven organization working in close collaboration with industry partners to be an accountable, innovative and effective lobby organization; advocating, coordinating, promoting and helping the growth and development of Nova Scotia’s beef industry.

Our Vision for NSCP and the Industry…

Against the backdrop of stated issues and trends, we considered what the NSCP and the industry could look like in the future.  The following paragraphs present the summary of vision elements.

Partnerships and collaboration:

A recurring theme is the need to further strengthen alliances, partnerships in the industry.  In our preferred future, points include:

A common maritime regional emphasis and vision of the financial and other dimensions of the industry.  In this respect, the NSCP can act as a facilitator, to create partnerships throughout the industry: with processors, producers, government, private lenders and others.

Profitable interdependence versus dependence which results in loss of primary producers

NSCP image and role: NSCP will be seen as:

  • One that represents quality
  • An innovator, leader,   winner
  • Providing leadership and quality services
  • A valuable source of market and production technology information
  • Recognizing and reacting to new and emerging trends
  • Has responded to the “communication” challenge: the NSCP is highly visible

Competition:

The competition is seen as a means to push the entire provincial industry to excel.

Product image and demand :  Product offerings are seen as safe, quality, innovative and respond to the needs of consumers. Demand for Nova Scotia’s Beef products is high.

Environmental friendliness:  Industry is recognized as being environmentally friendly

Animal Welfare:  industry is seen as a humane and caring steward of the animals we produce.

Market Approach:  market approaches include emphasis on profitable value added initiatives, local and regional branding, traceabilty and identification, commodity production as a continued sector
